“Green Living Express” developed for FedEx Expo event

Inspired by the five elements of nature in Chinese culture, we developed an experiential learning concept for our partner FedEx, featuring five modern elements to support sustainable development: water, energy, plastic, food, and forest. Green Living Express is a giant board game, where participants experiment within five different stations and learn about their environmental footprint. We designed, constructed and ran this activity as an interactive learning experience so participants could better understand the key environmental challenges and how to keep the elements in balance by reducing their environmental impact. FedEx hosted the game in the US National Pavilion on Friday, June 18, 2010.Click here to see more.

Labour and Environmental Training with the FLA

Top foreign brands are increasingly demanding that factories meet additional labor and environmental requirements without relaxing cost, quality, and timing. As part of an ongoing series, we’ve teamed up with the Fair Labour Association to train Chinese textile manufactures, using case studies and best practices to provide insight into evolving demands of both brands and consumers and demonstrate how going beyond environmental and labor “compliance” can not only keep factories ahead of regulations, but also reduce costs and improve competitiveness on the international stage.

Employee Engagement with FedEx

We developed a program for FedEx China to build environmental awareness in the Wuhan office, encouraging employee participation in actions related to environment and establishing a volunteer base for teaching about environment in local schools. The program ran for six months as part of FedEx China’s corporate social responsibility platform. During the program, 150 employees participated in sessions about environmental footprint, sustainability basics, energy and resource challenges, green innovations and role models. The program has been renewed for a second year and is now running in Guangdong Province. Download the report from the first program report here.

Green product development with eno

In 2008, we developed the Green Tees project with eno as a way to use fashion to spread environmental awareness. This included awareness training for designers, developing green messaging for youth and exploring eco materials.
After the success of the Green Tees, we followed up with the NETI series, launched in the Spring of 2009. It represents a new line of tees and accessories, communicating environmental challenges and humorously offering individuals ways to participate in solving them. At the same time, the NETI series embodies a new effort to apply more eco-friendly materials into fashion, starting with the line of t-shirts made from cotton waste and followed in the second half of the year with a series of phone charms incorporating recycled plastic in their design.

The NETI series was designed to raise environmental awareness
among Chinese youth using fashion as the main communication
channel.
The NETI series was launched on April 22nd, 2009 (Earth Day) in
Shanghai. It represents a new line of tees and accessories,
communicating environmental challenges and humorously
offering individuals ways to participate in solving them.

earthday students2 Earth Day Event Series

Since our founding, we’ve held an annual event to celebrate Earth Day and introduce Shanghai to our newest concepts, partnerships, and products. This year we had our biggest event yet – a green “DIY” attracting over 300 people, both foreign and Chinese. On the rooftop was a DIY organic garden by Organic Farm. Inside our green office, visitors spoke their “green voice” on camera and learned how to volunteer for GECKO, while down in the courtyard were the West-African drums of Jammala, a “Cool Your Bike” workshop sponsored by Momentum, and a green design fashion show with our interns’ “RE” products being displayed by the Fanye tap dancers. Hope to see you there next year!

IMG_5677_sresizeReuse.bag initiative with Jooi Design

The Reuse.bag campaign, and the product itself, was our first partnership in product development. The campaign was meant to raise awareness in Shanghai about the harmful impact of plastic bags and at the same time to raise funds for our GECKO community initiative. We developed the Reuse.bag with Jooi Design, a China-based designer of contemporary fashion accessories and lifestyle products. Our common goal was to introduce a product that would encourage lifestyles of reuse and give individuals an opportunity to spread environmental awareness in China. The Reuse.bag was launched on Earth Day 2008, a month before China banned free plastic bags.
