Inspired by the five elements of nature in Chinese culture, we developed an experiential learning concept for our partner FedEx, featuring five modern elements to support sustainable development: water, energy, plastic, food, and forest. Green Living Express is a giant board game, where participants experiment within five different stations and learn about their environmental footprint. We designed, constructed and ran this activity as an interactive learning experience so participants could better understand the key environmental challenges and how to keep the elements in balance by reducing their environmental impact. FedEx hosted the game in the US National Pavilion on Friday, June 18, 2010.

We are going to watch The Cove, the 2010 Oscar winner for Best Documentary. This film tells the amazing true story of how an elite team of activists, filmmakers and freedivers embarked on a covert mission to penetrate a hidden cove in Japan, shining light on a dark and deadly secret.

Time: Wed, 16 June, 7pm

Please RSVP with tom.bley@greennovate.net until Tuesday evening.
Bring your own drinks and snacks.

We want to invite you to Greennovate’s next movie night!

This Wednesday, we will watch Food, Inc.
This movie has been called the ‘Inconvenient Truth’ of the Food Industry. It exposes the highly mechanized underbelly of this industry that’s been hidden from the consumer. America’s food supply is now controlled by a handful of corporations that often put profit ahead of consumer health, the livelihood of the farmer, the safety of workers and the environment.

Time/Location: Wed, 2 June, 7 pm, 528 Kangding Road Building 1 (on the roof)

Bring your own drinks and snacks!

Greennovate was invited to participate at GREENeration Y Global Youth Summit, a conference on green entrepreneurship and social project in order to combat climate change. It was organized by AIESEC at Hongkong Polytechnic University. The four day event was a mix of lectures, panels and workshops and it was meant to inspire and empower university students to create innovative solutions for tackling climate change and sustainability issues. Mihela spoke about Greennovate’s work in China and discuss the business opportunities with students as their future career choices. It was great to meet some of the AIESECers from mainland China that have been involved in our community programs sharing their experiences in the real AIESEC spirit.

Summer has come to Shanghai, and we’d like to take advantage of the warm weather to invite you to our green rooftop for Greennovate Movie Nights! Every second week, we will show environmentally-themed movies on our green rooftop, while feeling the summer breeze blow through our organic garden!

This night is going to be a special night: It’s happening on ‘World Environment Day’, 5 June. It is a day that stimulates awareness of the environment and enhances political attention and public action. This years theme is ‘Many Species. One Planet. One Future’.

For our movie night, we will first introduce the MaGiC Design Competition, which is running right now.

Afterwards, we will sit together and watch Home, which is probably the visually most stunning environmental movies ever. Featuring the provocative and uniquely jaw-dropping aerial photography of famed photographer Yann Arthus-Bertrand, this soaring trip across planet Earth allows us to experience our home as never before. And some scenes were shot above Shanghai!

Time/Location: Wed, 2 June, 7 pm, 528 Kangding Road Building 1 (on the roof)
RSVP: Since space on our awesome roof is limited, please send a confirmation to tom.bley@greennovate.net by Tuesday evening.
Bring your own drinks/snacks!

Note: Should Shanghai weather surprise us with a shower, we’ll watch the film in our office.

A South China Tiger, believed to be the "stem" species from which all other tigers have evolved.

In a move reminiscent of a James Bond film plot point, government officials in Indonesia have arrested an unusually prolific tiger poacher. While this kind of arrest is not an entirely uncommon occurrence, this time the forest rangers have netted themselves a prize catch: the unnamed man, 57, is a legendary figure among law enforcement because he has personally killed over 100 Sumatran Tigers, an extremely rare and endangered species. It was a carefully-orchestrated sting operation in Kerinci Seblat National Park that finally nabbed the poacher, a man “very well-known in the underworld” who has racked up his triple-digit count over the last thirty years. The arrest is seen as a major positive development for the Sumatran Tiger, of which there are an estimated 500 left in the wild, as the poacher was single-handedly inhibiting the broad effort to bring the Sumatran Tiger back from the brink of extinction.

More than that, however, the poacher’s arrest signals a sort of turning point in conservation mentality when it comes to protecting wildlife, endangered or not. The softer tactics of the past have often proved inconsistent in their efficacy, so conservation advocates and officials around the world are stepping up their efforts and using more strategic and aggressive approaches to help stem the tide of species extinction and aid the cause of other environmental issues. Utilizing law enforcement to make sure protective laws are actually observed is part of this, and the aggression can even be found in the language of those working to help endangered species. “After ten hard years, I’m not saying we are winning the battle, but we are holding our own,” remarked tiger advocate Debbie Martyr (yes, that’s her real name), suggesting with her terminology that a combative mentality may be necessary to achieve serious progress.
